BRIEF DESCRIPTION:

The Government of Uzbekistan requested the Asian Development Bank (ADB) for a Technical Assistance to prepare a project to improve water resources management and irrigation. The outcome of the PPTA were:

  • preparation of a strategy, roadmap and investment plan for long-term ADB engagement in the water sector;
  • preparation of an investment project with interventions focusing in three areas: improved management of total water resources and main and inter-farm water deliveries to water users in selected areas; upgrading of the security and operational efficiency of water supply in areas served by aging pumped extension facilities; and
  • improved efficiency of water use and drainage water management in command area benefiting from improved and more secure irrigation water supplies.

The PPTA prepared a Sector Investment Project for water resources management; this will include among others: the feasibility studies of four selected core sub-projects; detailed implementation arrangements including methodologies and modalities for sub-projects selection and preparation, project management, detailed procurement and financial management procedures, project investment and financing plan, institutional and policy analysis with recommendations to support and enhance project returns; due diligence for safeguards and associated outputs according to ADB guidelines.

In the final phase, the PPTA prepared the strategy for future ADB engagement in the Water Resources Management Sector.
